The public is invited to festivities at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22 when Mayor John B. O‚ÄôReilly Jr. will preside over the grand opening of the city's newest outdoor aquatic facility, a splash pad at Whitmore-Bolles Park. The day's events will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, as well as crafts for children, giveaways, limited refreshments and music. The Whitmore-Bolles splash pad was funded, in part, by a pair of Wayne County Parks Millage Allocation Grants -- the first for $218,400 in fiscal year 2015 and the second for another $31,627 in fiscal year 2016 -- secured with the help of Wayne County Commissioner Gary Woronchak.

The City of Dearborn furnished the remaining portion of the $281,600 project budget, which also included the construction of a stand-alone comfort station. The Whitmore-Bolles splash pad is the third built in Dearborn in the last few years. The two others are at Hemlock and Crowley parks. All three splash pads feature action-automated nozzles and water dispensers, offering relief from the summer heat daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting. Admission to the splash pads is free, and seasonal swim tags are not required. For further information, call (313) 943-2350.
